Puddle of Mudd Essentials

Though alienation and rage are post-grunge hallmarks, Puddle of Mudd inject them with an intensity equalled by few of their peers. Anchored by Wes Scantlin's profanity-packed shrieks, the band's jams boast no shortage of serrated riffs and walloping skins. One of their first hits, 2001's “She Hates Me”, is a Nirvana-inspired tantrum soaked in self-loathing. “Blurry” may shift into power-ballad mode, but Scantlin's desperation is no less smothering. Recorded nearly a decade later, “Stoned” is riveting proof that Puddle of Mudd are lifers when it comes to unleashing relentlessly churning heaviness.
