Nirvana: MTV Unplugged in New York

Nirvana: MTV Unplugged in New York

Filmed in November 1993, MTV Unplugged in New York cast Nirvana in a completely different light: as an introspective, lo-fi folk act instead of a raucous grunge-punk band. The stripped-back setting especially suited the group’s late frontman, Kurt Cobain. Strumming a Martin D-18E acoustic guitar, he channelled his intensity inward, transforming defiant songs such as “Come as You Are” into sombre reveries and a cover of the Lead Belly-popularised traditional “Where Did You Sleep Last Night” into a harrowing, anguished lament.
