Swedish doom sorcerers Monolord aren’t just one of the most consistent bands of the genre—they’re also one of the most prolific. Delivering four full-lengths in their first six years of existence, this Gothenburg-based power trio emerged in 2013 with a tendency toward long compositions infused with winding guitar leads and Thomas Jäger’s distant, dulcet moan. Propelled by cyclical riffing, booming bass grooves and the emphasis on melody favoured by the Swedish doom tradition, their songs are usually underscored by a thick psychedelic atmosphere, like the 12-minute acid swirl of “Empress Rising” or the sombre, slow-rolling “Rust”.
