Jimmy Scott Essentials

A jazz singer of rare sensitivity, Jimmy Scott scored his first hit with an eerily open rendition of “Everybody's Somebody's Fool” for bandleader Lionel Hampton in 1949. Hampton nicknamed him “Little Jimmy Scott” due to his limited stature, the result of a genetic disorder that also prevented his young voice from changing. After fading into obscurity, Scott secured a robust '90s comeback thanks in part to singing “Sycamore Trees” on TV's Twin Peaks. His disarming contralto delivery positively quivers with vulnerability on striking ballads like Prince's “Nothing Compares 2 U”, evoking the feeling of yearning quietly from afar.
