Jefferson Airplane Essentials

Jefferson Airplane were the first breakout band to emerge from the Bay Area's thriving '60s psychedelic rock scene. They formed in early '65, and the addition of powerhouse singer Grace Slick helped the Airplane take off a year later, while the release of the trippy-but-tuneful Surrealistic Pillow in '67 ushered in the Summer of Love. Subsequent albums got heavier, but still featured the passionate political messages that made the Airplane hippie heroes. The band began to unravel by '71, and they called it quits the following year, reemerging in '74 as Jefferson Starship.
