While still working with groove metal titans Pantera, Phil Anselmo formed Down in '91, a supergroup featuring members of Corrosion of Conformity, Eyehategod and Crowbar. Once Pantera officially disbanded in '03, the singer devoted most of his time to the underground metal all-stars. Taking inspiration from Black Sabbath and their own Louisiana homeland, the band specialise in huge swampy riffs and slabs of heavy stoner rock. Never the most prolific act—fans got used to waiting years between albums—Down have always been more about weight and power than speed and velocity.
