Djonga Essentials

Sitting on the axis of trip-hop and revolutionary rhetoric, Djonga is part of a new wave of daring Brazilian hip-hop. The rapper’s ambitions began with a love of poetry and evolved into fiery social critiques. These are spat out over the gritty, industrial beat of "Esquimo", while the flourishes of sampled horns in the downtempo "A Música da Mãe" bring together traditional Brazilian samba and modern trap. Though the pounding beats of baile funk sneak into "Estouro", his collaboration with Karol Conka, Djonga focuses on creating lean, sparse beats to back his evolving sound.
