Ben Webster Essentials

Best known for blues and swing ballads, jazz tenor saxophonist Ben Webster had an unmatched tone, one that remains instantly recognisable for its airy warmth (“Cotton Tail”) and syrupy thickness (“Gone With the Wind”). Having come up in the ‘30s and ‘40s as a member of Duke Ellington's band, Webster would end up going solo and collaborating with some of jazz's greats: His meetings of the horns with Coleman Hawkins (“Tangerine”) were full of brilliant solos, while his work with Oscar Peterson (“The Touch of Your Lips”, “That's All”) remains some of the most compelling of the bebop era.
