Dominguinhos' rags-to-riches story is one of the great fables of Brazilian music: Luiz Gonzaga discovered him busking as a child, gave him a new accordion and introduced him to a who's who of Brazilian pop. The kid went on to a five-decade career that saw him playing with Brazil's greatest singers and also composing and performing his own formidable forró. But the music, as always, is the real story: Dominguinhos' joyful accordion sparred with his grave, even melancholy voice, perpetually inviting us to walk the razor's edge between joy and pain with him.
