Wanting has become a master of the Mandopop ballad—both the intimate, piano-centred versions and the grand takes full of violin swells and guitar. She debuted in 2012 and instantly made a splash with the sparse slow-burner “You Exist in My Song”, which highlights her stellar vocal abilities and songwriting skills. Since then, she has added electronic splashes (“Drenched”) and midtempo rock touches (“Anxiety”) to her songs. But she's at her best on emotionally charged piano numbers in which the music and her voice build from a near-whisper to a shout.
