Naming themselves after a synthesizer function, Mark Bell and Gez Varley took the human-machine interface to new extremes with their duo LFO. One of the first acts signed to Warp Records, LFO pioneered a stark style dubbed "bleep" that made its mark with pointillist melodies and stomach-churning bass. Their early singles, featured on 1991's Frequencies, became all-time rave classics, and though Varley left in 1996, LFO found new fans with 2003's equally heavyweight Sheath. Bell enjoyed a celebrated career as a producer of acts like Björk and Depeche Mode.
