Camera Obscura: Next Steps

Camera Obscura’s 2003 album, Underachievers Please Try Harder, introduced the Glasgow band to a global audience. But their homespun take on orchestral ‘60s pop was already in full effect on their low-key 2001 debut, Biggest Bluest Hi-Fi, as heard in the sweetly serene “Eighties Fan”. A dozen years later, “Troublemaker” showed how Tracyanne Campbell’s aching melodies shine just as brightly when cast against a backdrop of luminous synths.
