San Francisco was a musical melting pot in the mid '60s. The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane and other greats mixed blues, soul, garage rock and country to create the culture-shifting psychedelic scene in the Bay Area. Sly Stone was a big influence as a producer and performer, and the cosmic country rock of New Riders of the Purple Sage and the proto-punk of The Flamin' Groovies inspired many.
