Daniel Lanois has brought an ambient sensibility to many rock records; conversely, the Canadian producer's pedal steel lent a country twinge to Brian Eno's Apollo: Atmospheres & Soundtracks. With ringing guitars and lingering reverb, he turned U2's "The Unforgettable Fire" into a richly textured tone poem, and he emphasised colour and space with a painterly touch on Bob Dylan's "Cold Irons Bound".
