The fact that David Davidson studied jazz guitar at the Berklee College of Music speaks to the astronomically high levels of technique poured into Revocation’s fusion of death metal and thrash. Starting out as Cryptic Warning before changing their name in 2006, the Boston group boast loads of primal rage, yet it’s always in service of their elaborately slithering compositions, which over time have become more fluid and, as 2016’s Great Is Our Sin demonstrates, imaginatively melodic. The bulk of the credit goes to Davidson, who, on top of leading Revocation’s attack with his dynamic chops, serves as their chief songwriter.
