Released in 2000, the movie Requiem for a Dream is a dark, dystopian glimpse into the horrific world of spiralling drug addiction. Accompanying director Darren Aronofsky’s characters on their fateful journeys is a soundtrack of rare immediate power, all the more so for its pared-back instrumentation and muscular performances by Kronos Quartet. There is no doubt that the iconic status Clint Mansell’s music has deservedly garnered is largely down to composer David Lang’s skilful string quartet realisations that give this soundtrack its claustrophobic, funereal undercurrent.
