Incorporating myriad cultures and languages, an unending number of sonic influences, styles and fusions and 54 unique countries, Africa is anything but monolithic. In 2026, to coincide with Africa Month—celebrated annually in May to commemorate the 1963 founding of the Organisation of African Unity—we’re inviting you to take a tour through the African continent’s most vibrant sonic capitals. The Sounds of Africa is our spotlight on the numerous textures and facets that capture not only the sounds of the continent’s most prolific music hubs, but also their spirit. We asked a group of artists, industry executives, tastemakers and influencers to curate their favourite tracks showcasing what makes each city unique, covering the rich soundscapes of Cape Town, Durban, Harare, Luanda, Abidjan, Kinshasa, Dakar, Kampala, Cairo and Casablanca—adding to last year’s collection which featured Lagos, Accra, Johannesburg, Nairobi and Dar es Salaam. Here, you’ll also find music from all-time African legends and exclusive DJ mixes that offer insight into what’s moving the needle across the continent.

The Sounds of Dar es Salaam

Dar Es Salaam: Globally Relevant, Locally Beloved “Music embodies the spirit of Dar es Salaam,” singer-songwriter Marioo tells Apple Music, “from its vibrant culture and romance to the grind and resilience of its people. The Sounds of Cape Town

Cape Town: Keep Gqom and Carry On “Cape Town has never been the popular choice to represent South African music,” says revered MC YoungstaCPT. “But if you look at the origins of most South African art, the earliest renditions were in the Cape. Prophets of the City, Brenda Fassie, Abdullah Ibrahim and even the Malay Choir—there’s a clear connection to the music and the aura of the cape. When it comes to hip-hop, it’s very political and militant, our music style is more social commentary and touches on everyday issues rather than consumerism in the mainstream.”

The Sounds of Harare

Harare: Zimbabwe’s Biggest Influencer “Harare’s music is a mirror of the city itself,” music executive Taponeswa Mavunga says. “A place of contrasts, deeply rooted in tradition, yet constantly reinventing itself. Its sound moves effortlessly across generations, telling the story of a city that survives, adapts and creates culture against all odds.” Dive into the sounds that make Harare great.

The Sounds of Durban

Durban: Driven by the Drum“The sound of Durban is dominated by the bass and drums that keep the rhythm going,” DJ, producer and Durban music industry veteran DJ Tira says. “Small [amounts of] vocals here and there and, most especially, producer tags make the sound of Durban unique.” Explore Durban’s incomparable pulse here.

The Sounds of Luanda

Luanda: Vibing Through Generations“Luanda is a vibrant city [that’s] constantly evolving,” says lusophone music specialist Carlos Gonçalves. “A capital where music, culture and identity move together in rhythm. From its streets, generations of artists have shaped sounds that travel far beyond Angola, telling the story of a city alive with creativity and expression.” Discover Luanda’s sonic magic here.

The Sounds of Cairo

Cairo: Bustling Yet Balanced“Cairo is one of the world’s oldest living cities, founded over a thousand years ago, yet its cultural memory stretches far deeper,” says music industry exec Mahmoud Gamal El-Din. “This continuity makes Cairo feel less like a single city and more like a layered civilisation where contrasts—classical and popular, elite and street, nostalgic and modern—co-exist naturally. Its music reflects that spectrum.”

The Sounds of Casablanca

Casablanca: Powered by Purity of Spirit“Casablanca is not always easy,” says Moroccan singer-songwriter Jaylann. “It’s fast, it’s demanding—sometimes overwhelming. But what makes it unforgettable is its people. There is a rare humility, a warmth—a realness in Moroccans that grounds you no matter how intense life gets. It took me out of my comfort zone, opened me to others, to music, to life itself.”
