Selects: Batu

Oxford, UK, producer Batu (aka Omar McCutcheon) helped reshape underground dance music in the 2010s, masterminding a particularly dynamic strain of club fusion—one supercharged with snapping grooves and strange, silvery frequencies—on tracks like “Marius” and "Melts Into Air”. But on his debut album, 2022’s Opal, he largely set aside those bold riffs and thundering rhythms in favour of murkier sounds. “I was thinking a lot about dub and all of its various forms and its influences,” he tells Apple Music. His Selects playlist—in which DJs and producers showcase their favourite tracks of any given moment—speaks to that exploration, and highlights music he was listening to while making the album. “To me at least, there's a hazy, smoky, dubbed-out feel which appears in all these tracks. I guess it's something which has always been present and that I always enjoy a lot.” He’s quick to point to his Mala picks here to prove his point, but that spectral presence is heard everywhere in this set, from departed experimentalists Coil, Muslimgauze and Jon Hassell to electronic contemporaries like Blawan, Burial and Flying Lotus, and beyond.
