Iggy Pop Essentials

As the frontman for Michigan miscreants The Stooges, Iggy Pop stretched the physical and musical extremities of rock 'n' roll, with scorched-earth strikes like “Search and Destroy” blazing a trail for punk. But with David Bowie at the helm, Iggy's 1976 solo debut, The Idiot, revealed both the wounded crooner and sonic experimentalist lurking within the wild-child showman. And from the '80s on, the Pop moniker proved only semi-ironic, as evinced by the synth-slicked cover of the '50s hot-rod standard “Real Wild Child” or the radiant shoegaze shuffle of the 2016 single “Gardenia”.
