Gerard Grisey taught at University of California, Berkeley from 1982-1986. One of the founders of "spectralism" composition, which involves sustained and modulated, hypnotic harmonic colors. Recent work includes L'icone paradoxale (title refers to a painting of the Virgin Mary by Piero della Francesca) for orchestra distributed low instruments on left, high on right, trumpets and flutes in front, 17 gongs around the hall, instruments tuned in quarter-tones, two voices on phonemics. ~ "Blue" Gene Tyranny
