Apple Music Home Session: Sigrid

Apple Music Home Session: Sigrid

“‘It Gets Dark’ is my favourite song I’ve written,” Sigrid tells Apple Music of the 2022 track, a song about understanding—and appreciating—that life will always bring ups and downs. Following an expansive, string-laden acoustic rework released after the song came out, Sigrid offers a new, more delicate take on the track on this Apple Music Home Session. “It feels like a pretty versatile song,” the Norwegian pop star tells Apple Music. “It works with my full band leaning into massive drums, guitar solos and belting the lyrics, and it works bringing it back to the piano. It adds a more melancholic flavour to it.” For a cover, she turned to Frank Ocean’s “Lost”, for which she had a clear vision. “I can’t sing like Frank Ocean—he’s so brilliant,” she says. “Might as well try to put your own spin on it. We just wanted to make a mellow, sultry but cosy morning coffee type of cover.” Elsewhere, you’ll find an ethereal take on Ed Sheeran’s 2021 smash “Bad Habits” (“I hope his fans will approve”) and a cosy version of her 2021 self-love anthem “Mirror”. “It sounds like someone just grabbed the guitar around the bonfire in a midsummer night in Norway, and I’m here for it,” adds the singer about the latter. Opportunities to kick back and sing around a fire might be few and far between in 2022, however, as Sigrid releases her long-awaited second album, How to Let Go, and gets back on the stage after the 2020 hiatus. And that enforced break has made her more committed to her craft than ever before. “I realised that I really wanna do music for the rest of my life,” she says. “It can be a bit daunting when you figure out just how much something means to you, but in the end I think it’s a great thing. Not having touring as a part of my everyday routine for the past two years was quite the change, so now I’m ready to jump [in] head first. Can’t wait to get back onstage again night after night!”
