A six-man group based in Miami, Mayday! delivers a truly unique and extremely catchy sound on its debut full-length. The rhymes and singing are handled by Wrekonize and Bernz, while Gianni Ca$h, L.T. Hopkins, Plex Luthor, and Nonymous provide the genre-shifting live musicianship. Nineteen tracks deep, Take Me to Your Leader successfully blends hard rock, radio-friendly pop, and surprisingly thoughtful hip-hop lyricism, sprinkled with touches of punk, soul, metal, and even a little electronica. In lesser hands this sort of diversity could easily result in a jumbled mess, but here it works perfectly. Songs address heavy-duty issues like America's economic collapse, struggles of drug addiction, dictatorship overthrows during the Arab Spring, pros and cons of abortion, and ramifications of the Patriot Act. Yet despite the weighty topics, most of these tracks would sound right at home on modern-day airwaves. The release is bolstered by high-profile guest appearances (Tech N9ne, MURS, Krizz Kaliko, Ace Hood), but the real star here is Mayday! itself; the group gives us a seriously impressive first album.
