On first glance, Issa Vibe seems a studiedly offhand, understated name for this latest, star-studded mixtape from steady-rising MC Big Tobz. Dig a little deeper though, and you’ll find it’s an apt description of this Walthamstow native’s abilities as a versatile master of mood and atmosphere. In one sense, this means hard-edged, tightly woven lyricism in its purest form: as on the rugged, Lethal B-indebted Sneakbo link-up “One Hunna” or with fellow east Londoner Dizzee Rascal on dark-hued, instant street anthem “Smoke”. But the erstwhile Oluwatobi Aiyeola can channel innovative, loverman Afroswing too. “My Sweetie” locks into a half-sung, pidgin-inflected groove, while “Stepped In”—helped along by a hypnotic Geko vocal—is, well, a fittingly enormous vibe of slinky keys and jittery, club-ready drums.
