Maverick City Music are, as their name implies, renegades in the world of praise & worship. Forged during a string of writing camps in 2018, the multiracial collective of singers and composers ditch the pop-inspired polish that defines the genre’s contemporary scene and instead bang out deeply expressive pieces of sacred music grounded in the raw experience of loving God. This gives their albums—which unfold like improvised worship services—a real throwback feel. The pianos are big and passionate, while the choir vocals hark back to vintage gospel. It may be the digital age, but Maverick City Music like their religion old-time.
