Lithuanian Composers

Lithuanian Composers

Lithuania’s music was long overshadowed and at times suppressed until the collapse of the Soviet Union from 1989. Today, that Baltic country’s vibrant and still-growing musical heritage is emerging thanks to the championship of such leading artists as Gidon Kremer and Marc-André Hamelin. You can discover breadth and depth of Lithuanian music across the past 150 years, including the late-Romantic lusciousness of Dvarionas’ Élégie for Violin and String Orchestra, or the rich pianism of Godowsky’s Piano Sonata. There’s the folk-like charm of Čiurlionis, composer as well as world-class painter, and the eerie sound worlds of contemporary composer Serkšnyté’s De profundis.
