Evan Dando may have been crowned an alterna-hunk in the '90s, but back in 1987, his Lemonheads were revelling in the ugly, Hüsker Dü–worthy racket of “Hate Your Friends”. As he developed his songcraft, Dando also became a faithful interpreter of others, taking on the heartfelt folk of Victoria Williams' “Frying Pan” and dressing up Gram Parsons' “I Can't Take It Anymore” in a gleaming twang.
