There’s no way to measure Allen Toussaint’s impact on the music of New Orleans in his seven decades as a performer, writer and producer. Even if his credits only encompassed his time with The Meters, Dr. John and Irma Thomas, there’s a goldmine of funky goodness. Add hits for LaBelle and The Pointer Sisters, solo recordings and later collaborations with the likes of Elvis Costello and you still only get an inkling of Toussaint’s full genius.
