Singer/songwriter/playwright Johannes Kerkorrel is regarded as one of the founding figures of what came to be known as alternative Afrikaans music. The former journalist first performed alongside fellow Voëlvry movement artists Koos Kombuis and Bernoldus Niemand during the '80s, before launching a successful solo career in South Africa, Belgium and the Netherlands. News of his untimely death rang through the region, but his music continues to resonate.
