something in the air

“I’ve been going a thousand miles an hour lately,” ELIO declares on something in the air’s jacked-up club-thumper “A2B”—business as usual for this Charli XCX-approved pop prodigy. Over a series of EPs and mixtapes, ELIO has proven herself to be one of our most reliable observers and sonic avatars of life in the digital fast lane, and all the dysfunctional screen-mediated relationships and quarter-life crises that come with it. On this debut full-length, the LA-via-Toronto-via-Wales singer continues to seek therapy through dance-floor delirium: “kissingonthewayhome” is a giddy hit of 8-bit pop that keeps fleet-footed pace with our post-“Boy’s a liar” world, while “ASPHALT RODEO” is part COWBOY CARTER R&B foot-stomper, part San Juan block-party jam. But the full-album format gives ELIO the space to exhale, tap into her inner Kacey Musgraves and take stock of her whirlwind life with a more deeply felt sense of regret and gratitude: Where the ’80s-glossed “i got the boy” ruefully revisits the immature ex who’s blossomed into an upstanding man with his new girlfriend, the centrepiece acoustic ballad “my mothers jeans” is a poignant meditation on getting older and that moment when you start to see your parents more as flawed people than infallible providers.
