About DJ Sumbody
DJ Sumbody’s take on the South African house variant amapiano is highly influenced by kwaito, the ’90s-era subgenre which serves as a key bridge between the two styles. His 2019 debut album, Ashi Nthwela, featured kwaito legends M’Du Masilela and Thebe along with modern stars such as Busiswa, Cassper Nyovest and Kwesta. Additionally, Sumbody co-owns the Ayepyep Lifestyle chain of lounges, whose locations in his hometown of Pretoria helped launch amapiano into the national consciousness. The term “Ayepyep” began as Sumbody’s catchphrase; in 2017, it became the title of his breakout hit (featuring DJ Tira, Thebe, and Emza). In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, in 2020 Sumbody began co-hosting the online show Ayepyep Lifestyle Lockdown Sessions, which serves as a platform for DJs and artists to showcase their mixes and songs.
