“I think it started because of my belief in God,” Lunay tells Apple Music of his earliest experiences with music, listening to his parents sing at church when he was just a kid. “That awakened something in me.” By his own account, faith and positivity have only helped the young Puerto Rican reggaetonero’s natural R&B chops and rapid ascent in música urbana. After making a powerful first impression with his features on high-profile posse cuts like “A Solas” and “Luz Apaga”, his single “Soltera” and its corresponding remix with Bad Bunny and Daddy Yankee proved one of the biggest Spanish-language hits of 2019. “I felt that was everything I asked God for since I was a kid, everything I had fought for since I was young,” he says of securing such superstars for the inverted single ladies’ anthem. These compounding successes led to Épico, Lunay’s engaging full-length debut. From the moonlit escapades of “Aventura” to the taboo passions of “Quiero”, he brings a romantic flair to thumping reggaetón rhythms and polished synth programming. Aided by Wisin & Yandel, “Mi Favorita” evokes Romeo and Juliet imagery to express a love as strong as any drug, while “Malas Intenciones” offers a jaded yet nonetheless empowered perspective on the “Soltera” theme.
