While concerts are a distant memory for many who’ve missed out during the pandemic, that doesn’t mean the live experience can’t be felt from the comfort of home. Mandopop hero Jay Chou’s 2019 live album, Jay Chou The Invincible Concert Tour, is now available on Apple Music. The album was recorded during his career-spanning show, with a set list of hits covering the full range of his eclectic, innovative style. Remastered in Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos and available exclusively on Apple Music, the recording puts you right into the crowd and on the stage. Chou spoke with Apple Music about the remastered release.
What are your strongest memories from the Invincible concert tour?
“A lot of my fans have been with me for many years and are very familiar with my songs. They often sing along with me at concerts, which is very moving. So we incorporated many interactive sections, like in the retro big-band part of the show, specifically during ‘Ancient Indian Turtledove’, where we gave anyone the chance to show off their voice [through a kiss-cam-style video that showed audience members singing into microphones]. The ‘song request’ section is also an exciting moment of interaction with fans.”
How did you approach arranging the songs for a live band?
“I’m in constant discussion with the production team on how to differentiate the songs from their studio versions, with the hope that fans who come to the shows can immerse themselves more fully in the atmosphere of each song and get a whole new feeling from them.”
To celebrate the 20th anniversary of your debut album, Apple Music launched the “Jay Chou Universe” in 2020. How do you reflect on all you’ve achieved over the last 20 years?
“Big thanks to all the fans who have supported me all the way. After growing with me for the last 20 years, I believe that they will continue to see me surpassing myself in the future. I hope that Chinese pop music can get more attention around the world.”
