Foreigner Essentials

Foreigner played a huge role in the transformation of shaggy '70s rock into sleek '80s pop. Their early hits, including the swaggering “Hot Blooded”, boasted Lou Gramm's heartfelt wails and riffs that roared like jet engines. Overhauling their sound in 1980, Gramm and guitarist Mick Jones unveiled a dance-driven attack inspired by punchy disco and New Wave—the crazy, infectious “Urgent” is a club jam thanks to its relentless funk. Their defining moment arrived with 1984's “I Want to Know What Love Is”: a mesmerising power ballad infused with ethereal synthesisers and gospel-style passion.
