Victory

Victory

A collection of songs that reflect dance music’s chaotic subgenres. Madeon’s racing to the finish line on Victory, and the all-out sprint kicks off in the first moments of opening track “Hi!”. The French artist born Hugo Pierre Leclercq wastes little time diving straight into the collection of trash punk and dance tunes—updating the chaotic dance subgenres that began percolating in the early 2000s. “Super Platinum”, which features Erick the Architect, recalls the work of electro house heroes MSTRKRFT, built around synths heavy on overdrive. The trick comes, though, when Madeon effortlessly morphs the song into a funky disco-house cut. The Slayyyter-assisted “Fire Away” begins with a rubbery bassline and straight-ahead drum groove, while synths introduced during the chorus give the song an anthemic quality. It’s the sort of track built for summer nights that seemingly never end, the one to cue up when the club night hits a lull.
