When Alison "VV" Mosshart's feverish howls meet Jamie "Hotel" Hince's blistering guitar, it's the sound of a raging beast unleashed. The Kills' garage rock may be stripped down—heck, they don't even have a drummer—but it's loud, audacious, and electrifying. Their 2003 debut, Keep On Your Mean Side, is minimalist rock at its greasiest and grittiest, with Mosshart's slithery snarl taking centre stage. But even as they've fleshed out their sound with menacing electro-punk ("U.R.A. Fever") and mechanistic beats doused in bluesy guitar fuzz ("Satellite"), the duo are just as dangerously seductive.
