Melodic bass music is all about combining the hard with the soft, and few producers have fused force with elegance quite like ILLENIUM. For 2016’s “It’s All on U” (off his debut album, Ashes), the musician/producer layered Liam O’Donnell’s soaring topline over a slow and spacious groove. He’s flirted with emo on “God Damnit” and pop-punk on “First Time,” but ILLENIUM’s dramatic self-expression shines brightest on songs like 2017’s future-bass masterpiece “Crawl Outta Love,” which balances pensive piano with pyrotechnic drops to spine-tingling effect.
