Harry Nilsson’s catalogue—whimsical, wild, and devastating—is a treasure trove of pop songwriting. Many are familiar with his straightforward, heartsick “One,” which was made famous by Three Dog Night’s simultaneously intense and plaintive version. But he was a master of psychedelia (the Beatles-esque “1941”), theatrical numbers (Shelley Duvall’s “He’s Large,” from the 1980 film Popeye), and even the unabashedly goofy (the zany “Coconut”).
