Cedric Burnside Essentials

For Mississippian Cedric Burnside, the hill-country blues are a family affair. His initiation arrived in the early ’90s when, as a teenager, he began playing drums for R.L. Burnside, his grandfather and one of the tradition’s greatest practitioners. Cedric eventually added guitar to his skill set and, in addition to collaborating with Lightnin’ Malcolm and Bernard Allison, began dropping solo joints, like 2015’s Descendants of Hill Country (credited to the Cedric Burnside Project) and 2018’s Benton County Relic. Both albums are packed with precisely the kind of tough and relentless grooves for which the genre is known.
