A popular and well-earned first prize winner at the 2021 Chopin Piano Competition, Canadian Bruce Liu is a pianist to watch. Like so many of his generation, he has a formidable technique, but he also has imagination and a willingness to take risks. The result is playing of character and personality, wit and subtlety. Taken live from the competition, Liu’s well-chosen programme culminates in a performance of Chopin’s variations on Mozart’s duet Là ci darem la mano that is quite simply heavenly.
