Mischief

Mischief

Mischief was made during the same March 2021 sessions that produced The Sound of Listening. It stands up as a separate effort, the proper fourth album by the entity known as the Mark Guiliana Jazz Quartet. This band has maintained a mostly stable lineup since debuting with Family First in 2015 and following up with Jersey in 2017 (Fabian Almazan stepping in for pianist Shai Maestro on the latter). On Mischief, Guiliana and Maestro are joined by regulars Jason Rigby (tenor sax) and Chris Morrissey (bass) for an outing a bit sparser texturally than The Sound of Listening (which had added elements of bass clarinet, celeste, mellotron, and other goodies). Mischief is straight quartet, and the playing is sublime. Mixed in with originals by Guiliana (“Mischief,” “Alive at the Same Time,” the solo percussion sendoff “As You Were”) and Morrissey (“Radio Carbon Dating App,” “Audience Américain”) plus two freely improvised interludes, there’s a heart-melting rendition of “When the Day Turns Into Night” by Fred Rogers, sung on Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood by the man himself.
