Midnight

Grace Potter does not muck about. Her fifth album (the first without The Nocturnals) kicks off with a strong double dose of her honeyed voice overtop funked-up rock (“Hot to the Touch,” “Alive Tonight”) laced with witchy harmonies to ease the transition into the quieter, soulful songs (“Delirious”, “The Miner”). There are moments of theatrical sleaze, too, with Grace cooing over deep bass (“Look What We’ve Become”), before dropping her tough pose to reveal the real heartbreak beneath (“Let You Go”).
