Les Trois Accords are an indie rock quartet from Drummondville with a penchant for puns, wordplay, and sparkling melodies. Their fifth studio album J’Aime Ta Grand-Mère shimmers with sweetly absurdist songs, best demonstrated by its steel drum-driven title track. While “Bamboula” takes a page from the Pixies, with its thundering kick drums tempered by a moody bassline, lead singer Simon Proulx channels his inner Ian Curtis with deep, quasi-punk vocals. Proulx lightens the mood momentarily with “Exercice,” which flip-flops from a childish schoolboy chant before exploding into a garage rock jam, and then dialing it back down again. J’Aime Ta Grand-Mère is gorgeously sequenced, smartly lyrical, and referential of both British new wave and local Québécois indie legends.
