Give thanks to the jerk who broke Kelly Zutrau’s heart. The Wet vocalist’s romantic misadventures have inspired a gorgeous album quietly ablaze with feeling. Her voice—sturdy, inviting and on plaintive closer “These Days”, fairly remarkable—has plenty to work with. Multi-instrumentalists Joe Valle and Marty Sulkow wrap Zutrau up in a sonic blanket: all pretty guitar licks, woozy synths and crisp beats. The stately “Deadwater” is a sumptuous highlight, “Island” reboots fluttery ‘90s R&B, while “It’s All in Vain”, “Weak” and “Move Me” all perfectly capture the shaky resolve of a broken heart in repair.
