About Portrait
Portrait were among the smoother R&B groups to debut during the tail-end of the new jack swing era. The group's members -- Phillip Johnson, Eric Kirkland, Michael Saulsberry, and Irving Washington -- came from Los Angeles, Providence, and Tulsa. Signed to the Capitol label, their first single, "Here We Go Again!," reached the Billboard R&B chart in October 1992 and peaked at number three. It was the group's biggest hit -- it narrowly missed the Hot 100 -- but "Honey Dip" (number 18), also taken from their self-titled album, also remains one of the era's more notable singles. Kurt Jackson replaced Johnson in 1995, the year Portrait released their second and final Capitol album, All That Matters. It didn't fare as well as Portrait, though "I Can Call You" and an update of Bee Gees' "How Deep Is Your Love" were moderately successful. The covers-oriented Picturesque (1996) and Share My Love (2005) were issued in Japan. ~ Andy Kellman
