It’s only fitting that twin sisters Jessica and Lisa Origliasso named their duo after Winona Ryder’s character in Heathers, who can inhabit the social dark side yet proves to be good-hearted. The Veronicas toe a similar line between spiky provocation and mass appeal, all while flitting between divergent styles and trends. The Brisbane pair debuted with 2005’s “4Ever”, a fizzy pop-rock tune conceived by writer/producers Max Martin and Dr. Luke. The track’s belted-out vocal exchanges, gnashing guitar and bubbly beats foreshadowed the counterpoint of strings and rumbling distortion on 2007’s “Untouched”, which would go on to become their signature track. Rather than stick with surging sing-alongs, The Veronicas topped the Australian chart with their 2014 piano ballad “You Ruin Me”, which showcased their powerful vocal range in a whole new context. Since then, the sisters have comfortably charted their own course, taking inspiration from fellow Australian export Kylie Minogue for 2016’s “In My Blood” and circling back to fist-pumping power-pop on 2023’s “Perfect”.
