The Juliana Theory Essentials

Apple Music

The Juliana Theory evolved quite a bit between the feverish emo-pop of their 1999 debut and the brooding alt-metal of their 2005 swan song, Deadbeat Sweetheartbeat. Even so, the Pennsylvania band always kept the mood heavy and climactic, with an ever-pervasive sense of angst, whether proclaiming "Emotion Is Dead" in 2000 or taking an ambitious journey through alt-rock, power metal and moody synth-pop on 2002's Love. Precision is a key ingredient too, with three guitars snaking swiftly around each other over stadium-rock beats, as lead singer Brett Detar simmers and sneers through it all.
