John Prine's gift for mixing visionary imagery with down-home country/folk settings made him one of America's most revered troubadours. Overflowing with compassion, he sang of a lonesome elderly woman on the folk standard "Angel From Montgomery" and lamented a Vietnam vet's drug addiction on the much-covered "Sam Stone", but his piercing prose ran hand in hand with his Midwestern sense of humour.
