Part of country’s 2010s-era new school, Jimmie Allen has a knack for mixing together elements of Top 40 twang and laidback R&B, creating tunes both catchy and poignant. Over gentle acoustic guitar and sentimental piano on “Best Shot”, for example, he uses silky-smooth vocal turns to lay out his intentions to give a relationship all he’s got. He captures the dizziness of young lust (and, maybe, love) when eyes meet across a crowded barroom during the euphoric choruses of “Make Me Want To”. And he teams up with rapper Nelly to deliver a weekend anthem with the chilled-out “Good Times Roll”.
