Holy Holy Essentials

Blessed with a rare gift for metamorphosis, Sydney’s Holy Holy made their name with harmony-laden indie folk before shifting to arena-sized anthems, epic EDM soundscapes and even guest rappers. “One of the hardest parts was where to draw the line,” Oscar Dawson told Apple Music about 2021’s especially wide-ranging Hello My Beautiful World. “We felt so free to just do what we wanted and to trust ourselves.” After introducing Timothy Carroll’s expansive vocals and Dawson’s atmospheric guitar on 2015’s gold-certified “Sentimental and Monday”, the duo scored a double-platinum hit with 2017’s “True Lovers”—complete with ’80s-style guitar shredding. From there, the pair dove into heartland synth-rock on 2019’s “Teach Me About Dying” and clubby ascension on 2021’s “The Aftergone”, featuring alt-pop duo CLEWS. Before embarking on an indefinite hiatus in 2025, Holy Holy brought their chameleonic sound full circle on the double EP Sweet Bitter Sweet, getting back to their folky roots on new tracks including “Love You Still” before revisiting some long-standing favourites in both acoustic and orchestral form. Even on the verge of parting ways, Dawson and Carroll couldn’t help but experiment a little bit more.
