Clifford Brown lived only to 25, but a few short years were all he needed to leave a permanent mark on jazz. As a trumpeter, Brown is the complete package. His clean articulation never wavers, even at high speeds. He can play lyrical accompanist to torch singers, then turn around and lead his band through a composition of startling intricacy and originality. Though he is gone, his recordings remain a gift to every dedicated student of music.
